Intermediate riding ability and fitness required
Note: You can ride this as one long ride (40km) with one shuttle just to Blue Tier, or 2 shorter rides (32km), with 2 shuttes. - Shuttle from Derby to Blue Tier (1 hour drive time)
- Ride Blue Tier Trail 20.6km - ride time between 1 hour and 2 1/2 hours, depending on your speed and stops.
- Blue Tier trail flows into last 4/5 of the Big Chook trail
- Lunch a Weldborough Hotel - opens at 11.30 am
- Shuttle up to Atlas Trail (or ride the 6 km gravel grind - up takes 20 - 30 minutes) (book the Weldborough to Atlas shuttle separate to the Blue Tier shuttle)
- Atlas Trail (35 minutes to 90 minutes to Devilwolf)
- Dam Busters - final section (plus Black Dragon, if you dare!)
- Arrive at Devilwolf - had enough? Head directly back to Derby via Howler, Sawtooth, Berms & Ferns
This is backcountry riding, so you need to be self sufficient. There are no short cuts out, so if you can't fix something, you are pushing your bike all the way to the end of Big Chook. Phone reception is virtually non-existent on this trail. You will get reception at some spots on Big Chook and Atlas trail.
Ride 2 - World famous all day old school Blue Tier Descent, Full Big Chook & Atlas trails 40+ km
Requires two shuttles Derby to Blue Tier and Weldborough Pub to Atlas Book this now (1) and Pub to Atlas Shuttle (2)
Note: Intermediate riding ability and fitness required
Same as Ride 1, ride new Blue Tier trail for 6.4 km (set ZERO from under the Blue Derby sign at the Blue Tier trail head) and then jump off a big left hand 180 degree berm. Hike a bike through the bush about 20 metres (follow ribbon on tress) and you are now on the old school Blue Tier Desecent. Turn left and enjoy. Trail then turns into an old 4wd track and then a climb up to a full Big Chook. (Takes about 45 minutes from 180 degree berm)
This ride is old school riding and requires great bike skills including picking ride lines etc. This ride gives you full Big Chook descent as well. From Weldborough Hotel, same as above.
- This is backcountry riding, so you need to be self sufficient. There are no short cuts out, so if you can't fix something, you are pushing your bike to either the forestry road Frome Rd or back to the Weldborough pub.
- Take the usual spares, chain breaker, links, pump, cable ties, etc
- Take a drink bottle / Camelback, snacks & $$$ for Weldborough pub.
- Camera etc
- Phone reception is virtually non-existent on this trail. You will get reception at the Atlas trail head 1 and some spots on Atlas trail.
